Water Withdrawal

The Company’s WANG-TIEN FACTORY Area is located at the Dadu District of Taichung City. According to the Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas of the World Resources Institute (WRI), it shows the total water resource pressure in the region where the factory area is located to be “Low - Medium (1-2)”.
The manufacturing process of the WANG-TIEN FACTORY Area includes chemosynthesis and final product preparation. During the production process, water is an important medium and raw material. Manufacturing will face significant risks without a stable water source.
Sources of water are underground water, tap water and surface water. Groundwater is the main source for manufacturing process which has no conflicts with the public use water. Tap water is mainly used for the water to be used by personnel. The use of underground water and surface water has obtained qualified water rights.

The water resource management policy adopts measurement, reduction, and recycling and reuse methods. Install meter at every unit for monitoring of every water resource consumption situation at all times. Regular review of the water consumption of the production by the unit. Through patrol inspection of factory to find out the source of the leaks for immediate handling, manufacturing process improvements, and increase the water recycling and reuse of the manufacturing process. In order to mitigate the impact on water resources use and future water shortage, the Company has initiated various water recycling measures, including rainwater recycling and equipment discharge water recycling. The Company aims to achieve 50% effluent recycling by 2025 and set water saving targets to track the results. In 2022, 3 water recycling measures were implemented; 1,414 metric tons of water were recycled in the year; total water withdrawals were 800.1 million liters and the water intensity was reduced from 65.70 (MT / Revenue of crop protection) in 2021 to 52.54 in 2022 (MT / Revenue of crop protection). 


Water Resource Discharge

The wastewater from the manufacturing process of the Company’s WANG-TIEN FACTORY is collected by the pipelines for transfer to the wastewater treatment facility. The first phase is handled via the advanced catalytic oxidation. After adjustments to the water quality, it will enter level one chemical flocculation handling, level two biological activated sludge process treatment, and level three (sand filtration, activated carbon, ozone) handling. After meeting the effluent standards of the regulations, discharge to the receiving water Wu River. It is discharge to the Taiwan Straits, which is between the Lishui Village, Longjing District of Taichung City and Quanxing Village, Shengang Township, Changhua County.
If the wastewater from the process is not properly treated and discharged, it will have an impact on the ecology of the waters that bear the water body, Wu Xi, and may also affect the crop harvest and safety of the downstream irrigation operations. Therefore, the WANG-TIEN FACTORY has established management procedures for water pollution prevention and wastewater operation standards. The wastewater treatment process is performed by professional wastewater operators in accordance with the regulations, and the changes in water quality and quantity are monitored and recorded. In consideration of the non-stop operations of the wastewater treatment system every day throughout the year, the Company has built a wastewater factory emergency response mechanism to ensure the appropriate handling response during the occurrence of unusual events.
For the best effects of water pollution prevention in ensuring that the production activities do not cause significant impacts to the environment, the Company has each year invested large number of resources to improving the efficiency of the wastewater system. In 2022, the invested environmental management cost is around NTD 186 million, of which water pollution prevention fees stand at 44%. Under the efforts of many parties, in 2022, the actual wastewater discharge for the WANG-TIEN FACTORY was around 291 million liters, which is 19.8% lesser than the approved discharge volume for the year, greatly reduced the wastewater discharge volume. It also meets the standard for the discharge water quality, achieving the wastewater discharge reduction target. In 2023, the target is to achieve 17.5% lesser than the approved discharge for the year for continuous improvement.

The wastewater of the manufacturing process of the BIOLOGICAL FACTORY is transported to the manufactu wastewater collection tank via the pipelines, after that, it is transported to the adjustment pond of the pre-wastewater treatment system. After sufficient adjustments, it enters the Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) to undergo anaerobic biological treatment and biological contact oxidation treatment. Followed by the second treatment stage which is commissioned to the Company’s affiliate Syntai Chemicals Ltd. for treatment at their wastewater treatment plant. The process will ensure that it will meet the effluent standard for discharge to the receiving waterbody Wu River. Thus, it has not been listed for the statistics quantifying the volume of water discharge by WANG-TIEN FACTORY. WANG-TIEN 2nd FACTORY does not have wastewater discharge.


Wastewater Prevention Measures of WANG-TIEN FACTORY in Recent Three Years

  • Purchase the quick sedimentation equipment for installation at the backend of the bio treatment system. It can strengthen the trap efficiency of the suspended solids, lower the connection unit - loading of the infiltration system by using natural sands, and operating frequency by operator performing backwashing of the sands infiltration system. Joint extension of the effective adsorption time schedule of the activated carbon filtration system.
  • Plan the building of automated control system for the wastewater treatment, integrate the control factor condition of every wastewater treatment unit, import dynamic information into the human machine interface for instant monitoring of the wastewater treatment situation.

  • Build the wastewater diversion and dispatch management mechanism for effective daily control in the homogenization of the pollution load waste. Thus, optimizing the polluted water plant treatment efficiency.
  • We introduced the air bearing turbine blower, which consumes 30% less energy than the root blower, and can achieve the same aeration effect. Also, it can improve the high decibel situation when the root blower is in operation (from 96 decibels to 75 decibels, 21 decibels lower).
